Reconsidering Buddhism and Shinto,in English

This class explores the development of the religious traditions of Japan and how they have played a part in Japanese history and society. Previous classes have focused on doctrine, religious thought, and specific texts. This semester we examine art and imagery associated with religious conceptions of the afterlife, such as heavens, hells, and pure lands. Japanese ideas and imagery of the afterlife have been shaped by the many religions of Asia, including Buddhism, Confucianism, Daoism, and kami worship (Shinto), and ideas of death continue to be reformulated today. Through a variety of artistic and visual genres (paintings, drawings, mandalas, statues, hanga, anime and manga, film, and even gardens), we will consider such topics as conceptions of land and space in Japanese religious thought and practice; the functions of hell as a place of penance and transformation; the multiple images of heavenly realms; and new ideas and images of life and death in the twenty-first century.※この講座は英語で行います。
