American Culture and Ernest Hemingway

Students will read one story each week in this class. The stories are written by Hemingway, and they range from 2 pages to 15 pages. Hemingway is famous for writing easy to understand sentences in simple language, and his stories can give us an interesting picture of America in the first half of the 20th century. We will discuss American values then and today, the battle between the sexes in Hemingway's world, and his unique masculine view of the world. This class will be aimed at upper intermediate students who want to improve their speaking ability and to acquire more vocabulary. It is recommended that students read the stories in English, but it is fine to read them in Japanese translation as long as you are prepared for discussion in English. In each class, there will be discussion time, a short lecture and further debate regarding cultural points.
