Cinema dialogue can be a rich source of natural speech and current turns of phrase. It has the added bonus of providing visual clues for situational context. In Mary Poppins, the "sugar helped the medcine go down." This course design helps the language practice medicine go down with the sugar of cinematic entertainment. It is hoped that persons who want to maintain the high level of fluency they achieved through work, study and/or experience living abroad and persons who would like to improve their listening comprehension skills by transcribing and discussing the dialogue and descriptive notes of a movie script will find this class beneficial. Homework will include transcribing movie dialogue from a cd recording (2 to 4 pages per week, depending on the movie) and reviewing vocabulary from the script. Some class time will be spent describing the scenes discussed in class the previous week, to a partner, discussing content and related topics, and reviewing vocabulary.
