To improve students' pronunciation and intonation in English by having each student read aloud in class so the lecturer can help correct them. To learn to appreciate literary works in English by discussing themes, literary techniques, authorial stances, etc., in English. 講義概要 We will read six representative stories by Pulitzer Prizewinning US authors: "Breakfast" by J. Steinbeck, a "populist," socially conscious writer; "The First Day of School" by W. Saroyan, who views everyday life with a warm, humane eye; "Indian Camp" by E. Hemingway, a "masculine" writer who describes challenging situations in a clear and simple style; "A Summer's Reading" by B. Malamud, a Jewish-American writer; "Mama's Old Stucco House" by T. Williams, a Southern writer best known for his plays; "The Kiss" by P. Buck, a Nobel Prizewinning woman writer, best known for her novels set in China, where she was raised.
