OZ51Reconsidering Buddhism and Shinto, in English- Two Religious Sites, Too Many Religious Traditions -

This semester we continue our exploration of the development of various religious traditions in Japan but with a different methodological approach: comparing two religious sites in each class session. This approach allows us to see developments and trends in the history of Japanese religions, and to make connections with similar developments on the continent. The sites chosen for comparison may be from approximately the same time period, or from very different times; of the same religious tradition, or different traditions. Exploring the continuities and contrasts elicited by these pairings will provide us with new ways for understanding the development of Buddhism and kami-related traditions in Japan, as well as highlight Confucian and Daoist elements that often go unnoticed.

スタンフォード大学大学院（宗教学）でPh.D.（博士号）取得。主たる研究分野は、「日本中世仏教史」、「神仏習合思想」、「日本宗教と食文化」など。
