This class is designed to give students the opportunity to learn and discuss topics on popular culture in America.
アメリカの音楽、ドキュメンタリー、映画などについて、英語で語り合う授業です。
The instructor hopes to enable students to discuss songs, films and documentaries.
ディスカッションの流れによって、講義の順番が多少ずれることが予想されます。
講座日程
(1) 9月27日（水） Elvis Presley and the birth of rock n roll. Discuss the cultural factors that gave birth to rock n roll in America.
(2) 10月4日（水） Listen to songs by Muddy Waters and Louis Armstrong and study their lyrics. Help students explain short narratives in English.
(3) 10月11日（水） Study the life and music of famous blues and country singers such as Billy Holiday and Ray Charles.
(4) 10月25日（水） Discuss problems associated with poverty and drug addiction in the United Sates. Continue with the Ray Charles narrative.
(5) 11月1日（水） Discussion the problem of racism in the United States? Why does it continue to exist? Explain the historical foundation. Introduce the film Malcolm X.
(6) 11月8日（水） Introduce students to various religious traditions in the United States. Show Malcolm X as an example of how Islam gained a significant following after the war.
(7) 11月15日（水） Consider the argument that “history teaches nothing.” Is this a valid perspective? Listen to “Apparently Nothing” and examine the lyrics.
(8) 11月22日（水） Imagine a world in which American and European culture does nor play a significant role? What would Japan look like? Briefly study the documentary on the Tensho Keno Shisetsudan to consider what the first Japanese to visit Europe experienced.
(9) 11月29日（水） Violence in American society. We will examine American History X and its cultural implications.
(10) 12月6日（水） Discuss the debate over immigration in the United States. Current events will be analyzed.
(11) 12月13日（水） The polarization of American values. Discuss the Republican vs. Democrat split.
(12) 1月10日（水） Discuss the collapse of the American family. The satire Little Miss Sunshine will be analyzed.
(13) 1月17日（水） American education during the Cold War Period will be discussed. Born on the Forth of July will be introduced to cover this topic.
(14) 1月24日（水） We will discuss the student movements and the hippie counter culture in the 60s and 70s.
(15) 2月7日（水） Discuss the documentary Inconvenient Truth. Analyze American attitudes and policies toward global warming.
備考 ※受講生様全体のレベルによって、当初予定の講座計画から若干変更となる場合がありますので、ご了承ください。
受講対象者：「レベル選択の目安」の中級相当の方。
Everyone is welcome.
No Prior Knowledge of American cultural history is necessary. A Bilingual method will be used for teaching.
英語の表現力は様々だと思われますが、バイリンガル教授法を導入するので、幅広い英語のレベルの方に受講していただけます。
